10th Annual Junior Birder Program

Over the  years, the Junior Birder program has inspired hundreds of youth and their families to get outside and learn the basics of birding. New Junior Birders can earn a badge and returning Junior Birders can win great prizes. Look for the many family-friendly birding events throughout the weekend, noted with the Family-Friendly symbol. FOR KIDS AGES 5-10.

Junior Birder Badge Requirements: 

First time Junior Birders must attend the Birding Discovery Lab on Saturday morning to learn the basics of birding.

Birding Requirements:

1st Year Junior Birders:

  • Attend the Junior Birder Discovery Lab at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center.
  • Attend a bird walk, a bird viewing station OR a birding workshop during the festival.
  • Attend at least ONE other Shorebird Festival activity of your choice.

2nd-5th Year Junior Birders:

  • Attend a bird walk during the festival.
  • Attend the Junior Birder Discovery Lab at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, a bird viewing station OR a birding workshop during the festival.
  • Attend at least ONE other Shorebird Festival activity of your choice.

6th Year Junior Birders:

  • Attend the Junior Birder Discovery Lab at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. Wear a badge to identify yourself as a 6th year birder and assist with one of the stations during the lab.
  • Attend an ‘adult’ bird talk.
  • Attend at least ONE other Shorebird Festival activity of your choice.

7th Year Junior Birders:

  • Attend the Junior Birder Discovery Lab at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. Wear a badge to identify yourself as a 7th year birder and assist with one of the stations during the lab.
  • Attend an ‘adult’ bird talk.
  • Accompany a researcher/ volunteer on one shorebird monitoring survey. Complete a journal entry within your notebook.
  • Attend at least ONE other Shorebird Festival activity of your choice.

Finally, all Junior Birders are encouraged to attend the Junior Birder Badge Awards Ceremony at the Islands & Ocean Visitor Center on Sunday, May 7th. To participate in the 12:30pm awards ceremony, bring completed packets to the Islands & Ocean Visitor Center by 11:00am.

Jr Bird Badge

Can’t make the awards ceremony? Provide contact information for the Festival to mail the badge, pin or other prizes. Contact information should be given to the Shorebird Festival/Junior Birder Badge program at 95 Sterling Highway, Homer, AK 99603 or e-mailed to kachemakshorebird@gmail.com no later than May 25th.

**Family-friendly events are customized for families and are offered throughout the Festival. Junior Birders can attend whatever field events (walks/stations) work best for their family’s schedule.
