2025 Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival: A Soaring Success

The 2025 Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival was one for the books!

This year, we welcomed over 885 attendees to Homer, Alaska, for four days of celebration, learning, and connection. With 183 events packed into the schedule, there was truly something for everyone—from seasoned birders to first-time festival-goers.

Together, we raised thousands of dollars to support causes close to our hearts: surfbird research, the Alaska Maritime and Kenai National Wildlife Refuges, and the Junior and Teen Birder Programs. These funds help ensure that both birds and young birders continue to thrive for years to come.

Festival highlights included:

A lively Kick-Off Celebration at the Pratt Museum, setting the tone for a joyful weekend.

  • Bird Trivia Night at Alice’s Champagne Palace, which tested knowledge and brought lots of laughs.
  • An inspiring Keynote Talk by Dr. Ben Mirin, who combined science, storytelling, and sound in a way that captivated the crowd.
  • A creative and hands-on art workshop led by Danielle Larsen, plus a stunning display of bird-themed artwork from artists near and far.
  • The ever-popular Bird Calling Contest, which brought the house down with talent, humor, and serious skill!

We were also thrilled to report 140+ bird species spotted during the festival. From shorelines to spruce trees, our feathered friends showed up in style.

This festival wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors, silent auction donors, volunteers, staff, and—most importantly—the birders. Your energy, enthusiasm, and love for birds made this event truly special.

From all of us on the festival team: thank you. Here’s to soaring into another wonderful year of birds, community, and conservation.
