Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival
two back-to-back weekends of birding
The Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival runs from Thursday, May 1 – Sunday, May 4. The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival runs from Wednesday, May 7 – Sunday, May 11.
There are two ways to travel between Cordova and Homer. The first, which we recommend, includes a flight to Anchorage and a road trip from Anchorage down to Homer along the Kenai river. The second involves taking the ferry across Prince William Sound from Cordova to Whittier and driving from Whittier to Homer. This is a beautiful boat ride with lots of opportunities for biding along the way, but there are no cars available for rent in Whittier, so we only recommend this if you have plans to secure a ride from a friend or find another way down the Peninsula. Cordova is not on the Alaska road system, so there is no option to drive directly between the two festivals.
There are great birding opportunities on the Kenai Peninsula which you can see on the way down to Homer! The Kenai river has many spots where drivers can pull over and see birds from the road, and there are boat tours in Cooper Landing and Soldotna which offer birding directly from the river.
